IMHO, I think you’re over-romanticizing Season 3 of Buffy, Rachel. A few bright spots, to be sure, but too many substandard monsters of the week and way too much Buffy/Angel angst.

(Linn and I just started Season 4 and your and Leeman’s positive opinions on Angel’s spin-off make me less apprehensive about watching alternating episodes of both series.)

I’m doing a halfway-through comment so I don’t forget everything like I did for the last one, because I actually have some time right now.

You don’t necessarily need to read Joss Whedon’s run on Runaways (it’s OK, but it’s s major letdown after BKV’s), and you should not under any circumstances read anything after Whedon’s. It jumps the shark tremendously, which is a shame, because it was great.

Yeah, I’m underwhelmed by SHIELD so far. I do love how many female characters there are, and the one character who intrigues me is Melinda May. That’s pretty much it. (Tom and I were also referring to the one character as not Eliza Dushku, btw.) I think the Topher comparison with FitzSimmons is spot-on. Some people loathed Topher (especially pre-Epitaph One), but EVERYONE had a strong opinion on him. Does anyone have a strong opinion on FitzSimmons?

Helo’s name was Ballard. I only remember that because I adored the way the English CEO lady (Adele?) said “Mr. Ballarrrrrd.” But then, I adored the way she said everything. I want her to read every book on CD ever.

I think “I Only Have Eyes For You” is my very favorite episode of Buffy. I actually prefer Buffy to Angel (I think Tom’s and my first fight was on that subject, embarrassingly enough),but then, I’m a sucker for angst. If I can relate to a character emotionally, I’m hooked. Relating to them intellectually is nice and all, but big broad angsty Buffy-style emotions are catnip for me. I could appreciate the characters on Angel, but I could never really love them the way I loved the characters on Buffy. (Well, the first. Few seasons, anyway.)

Those last two sentence fragments were supposed to be one sentence. For some reason, Tom’s iPad likes inserting random periods.
