Oh, hey … we watched the first episode of that then I sort of forgot about it. I take it it’s worth following up on?
If you can deal with overwraught teen drama in your back-down-from-Space opera.
I watched the first episode and it was too cringe-inducing for me.
Tom just finished reading The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making and wants to recommend it. (I really, really liked it, but I think he liked it even more than I did.) The first chapter is annoyingly twee because Catherynne Valente is too in love with her own arch ooh-look-at-me-I’m-doing-ironic-Victorian-children’s-literature voice, but stick with it until the plot starts and it gets quite good. It manages to be simultaneously whimsical and ironic, and has a touch of darkness but not too much (being a middle-grade novel). And it’s either a trilogy that only just wrapped this month or an ongoing series! I’m not sure which, since I haven’t read the sequels yet.
Ooh! sounds delightful!
OK, I just reread it, and I’m going to quote something from the author interview in the back:
Q: What’s your favorite TV show?
A: That’s tough, because so many shows go belly-up in later seasons, or get cancelled way too soon. I’d have a hard time choosing between Buffy and Farscape. I adore Doctor Who, but it pleases me inconsistently. Firefly, Better Off Ted, and The Sarah Connor Chronicles all break my heart for having been cancelled almost immediately.
So yeah. Rachel needs to read this book.
Hi! I’ve been listening to your show for probably about a year now, but for some reason this episode was the one that motivated me to comment. (I’m from Nashville, btw. Not really relevant, but I thought you might find it interesting.)
Rachel, if you’re looking for some shows to obsess over, I thought I’d share the ones I’m currently watching which I find worthy of that level of devotion: The Blacklist is several seasons in, so it would take some catching up, but I find it consistently compelling despite being basically a procedural. Marry Me is the funniest sitcom I’ve seen in years, but it’s struggling in the ratings, so it may not be worth it getting involved at this late date. If you liked Leverage, you may want to give The Librarians a try. It’s probably the weakest show on this list, but it is fun. Jane the Virgin is at one and the same time a soap opera and a complete parody of soap operas. It’s got a lot of really great female characters and strong family relationships, which I love! iZombie is the most recent show I started watching. It’s by the creator of Veronica Mars and has a very similar vibe.
Finally, a little while back I decided to check out this Australian mystery show that showed up on my Netflix recommendations. It’s called Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and I’m totally obsessed! Only two short seasons so far, but I think the third one may be about to start airing in Australia. No idea how long it will take it to reach the States, but it can’t be soon enough for me!
Hope this helps! 🙂
P.S. You should totally read that Catherynne Valente book recced earlier in the comments. It’s great!
Thanks so much for the suggestions and yay Nashville! Go Sounds!
