And with the corruption of food in LotR, let’s not forget one of the best scenes in cinema history, with Denethor stuffing his face as he sends Faramir out to die!
I really like this whole idea of food as a communion. The thing I kept thinking of here was vampires. There’s the obvious fact that they feed on blood, so what was once a communal and human act is turned into a predatory and monstrous one, but there’s also the fact that vampires can’t eat human food. It’s one of the ways they’re eternally cut off from humanity–they can’t share a meal. Heck, in Vampire: the Masquerade, the ability to eat food is an actual mechanical merit you can buy.
Also, when it comes to children eating, I’ve heard that my own annoyance with trying to get Billy to eat (he’s pretty firmly in camp “if you can’t cover it with peanut butter or ketchup, can you really call it food?”) is almost universal for parents of picky eaters, because making food for our children is this loving and creative act that they’re rejecting. It feels extremely personal, almost on par with someone reading something we wrote or looking at a picture we drew just for them and saying it’s stupid. Interesting stuff.
That’s a really awesome perspective on the rejection of food/rejection of self. I feel like a lot of the angst in parenting is this feeling like the child is rejecting the Essential Me when they don’t want to be held/played with/fed/etc when really all they are thinking is, “Brrbrbrrmmbbtrrrmrmm! Imma plane!!! Poop!”
